Danny Drinkwater is inching closer to sealing his exit from Chelsea, with Leicester City and Southampton reportedly interested in signing him

According to an exclusive report by Daily Express, Leicester City are plotting a move to bring Danny Drinkwater back to King Power Stadium. The Foxes will also face competition from Southampton, who are keen on signing the Chelsea midfielder on short-term loan spell in January.

Drinkwater had burst into the limelight in the astonishing season that was 2015-16, playing a key role in Leicester City’s shock Premier League title triumph after forging a solid midfield partnership with N’Golo Kante. Both Kante and Drinkwater though, went on to depart from the King Power Stadium to join Chelsea in successive summer windows.

But, while Kante would go from strength to strength at Stamford Bridge, Drinkwater has struggled to settle down, and has been heavily linked with a move away from the club. In fact, it was widely reported that Chelsea were ready to offload the player in the summer transfer window, before the 28-year-old ended up staying put.

Leicester were among the clubs who were interested in securing the services of Drinkwater this past summer as well. But, the former Premier League champions could not manage to bring him back from Chelsea, although it is hard to see why they would want him back.

Claude Puel has a stacked midfield unit at his disposal, with Vicente Iborra and Adrien Silva providing exactly the kind of qualities that Drinkwater will bring to his squad. Nevertheless, Leicester seem to be in the hunt to re-sign Drinkwater from Chelsea in January.

Southampton, on the other hand, could be an interesting proposition. The Saints could do with a box-to-box midfielder with Premier League experience, considering Steven Davis is in the twilight of his career. Drinkwater could prove to be a solid addition at St. Mary’s, where he could resurrect a stuttering career.

Both Leicester and Southampton are keen on signing Drinkwater on a short-term loan spell, which might work against them. Chelsea would instead want to offload him completely, although a loan deal with an obligation to buy could be worked out between two parties.

What does appear to be certain for now, is that Drinkwater’s failed Chelsea stint is coming to its end, with the player not in Maurizio Sarri’s plans. It now remains to be seen if Leicester, Southampton or some other Premier League club is able to land the Englishman in January.
