Manchester United are reportedly plotting a deadline day move for Kurt Zouma, with Everton also interested in the Chelsea defender

According to a report by French publication L’Equipe, Manchester United are interested in signing Kurt Zouma before Thursday evening’s transfer deadline. Everton are also eyeing a move for the Chelsea defender, although they only want him on a season-long loan deal.

Zouma arrived at Chelsea in 2014, with a lot of excitement around his talent. After two years of gradual progress within the first-team setup at Stamford Bridge, the player saw his development come to a grinding halt when he sustained a major knee injury.

Zouma subsequently missed nearly one season of football before he made his return to the pitch. Last season though, he was loaned to Stoke City, where he made 34 appearances, although he couldn’t save them from relegation. With his prospects unlikely to improve much at Chelsea this season, a move away from the Bridge makes sense. And, Manchester United and Everton are interested.

Manchester United’s eagerness to sign a centre-back this summer has been all too well known. A number of defenders have been linked with the Premier League heavyweights as Jose Mourinho aims to solidify his backline for the upcoming season.

But, the Manchester United boss has only been met with disappointment in his bid to sign a centre-back, the latest coming in the form of Diego Godin’s reported rejection. In his desperation to sign a player, it now looks like the manager has turned his attention towards one of his former clubs, Chelsea.

Mourinho was the Chelsea manager when Zouma arrived in 2014, and he seemingly has a lot of belief in the Frenchman, although it’s hard to see how he will boost his options in the short-term. Manchester United have thus, opened negotiations with their rivals over a possible move for the 23-year-old, although the Blues are unwilling to sell to a direct rival.

Chelsea’s stance over the interest from Manchester United gives Everton a major boost to land him on a loan deal, with the Toffees going into overdrive on deadline day. Zouma is likely to be joined by Yerry Mina and Andre Gomes at Goodison Park, as the Merseyside club look to get back on track after a slow start to the transfer window.

Manchester United, on the other hand, look like they could be done for the transfer window, with no signing in sight. If they do end up landing someone, it will likely be Toby Alderweireld, with Zouma unlikely to join from Chelsea, who would rather loan him to Everton.
