Chelsea and Manchester United reportedly established contacts with Bayern Munich in order to inquire the possibility of landing Thiago Alcantara.

According to the speculations made by ESPN, Manchester United and Chelsea reportedly established contacts with Bayern Munich to scour the possibility of signing Thiago Alcantara  from the German club, amid a potential midfield overhaul by the club.

Thiago is regarded as one of the best midfielders in Europe after his move to Bayern Munich. While the player did struggle in the beginning due to injuries, the arrival of Pep Guardiola saw him lock down a regular place in the Bayern Munich midfield, a course that continued under Carlo Ancelotti.

The Spanish international played a pivotal role in the five successive triumphs of Bundesliga titles and two DFB Pokal trophies, after his arrival in 2013. Although Thiago suffered a line of inconsistent performances last season as he only bagged 4 goals and 2 assists in 22 appearances across all competitions.

Presently, The Bavarians have nine midfielders in their roster and are planning to offload at least one or two of them this summer. Thus, the 27-year-old midfielder has been linked with a move away from Allianz Arena this summer, and return to his boyhood club Barcelona has also been mooted. Therefore, it piqued the interest of the two English giants to sign the services of the Spanish superstar.

Manchester United have been heavily linked with Thiago since years, even before the Spaniard departed to Bayern Munich. The player seems to be the right solution to the midfield crisis, in the Red Devils squad. He could fulfil the void created after the retirement of Manchester United legend Michael Carrick at the end of last season.

Thiago with his creativity in the middle of park can become a suitable companion of Paul Pogba in the heart of midfield.

However, Chelsea are reportedly also in the pursuit of the Spanish midfielder, with newly appointed manager Maurizio Sarri looking for reinforcements before the end of the summer transfer window, as Chelsea aim to improve their squad following an underwhelming campaign last year.

Additionally, the rumours of N’golo Kante’s possible move away from the club and Cesc Fabregas’ arrival into the last stage of his career has made Sarri look for the suitable reinforcements.

However, the report further suggests that Bayern Munich’s sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic remarked that the German champions are not planning to sell him in the near future and fancy to keep his services for the upcoming season.

Following the statement made by Salihamidzic, Thiago’s chances to move to either of clubs seems unfavourable. Therefore, both clubs should look elsewhere to fulfil their requirements as the English transfer window will be closed on the 9th of August, leaving limited time for the two English giants.
