Sergio Ramos has reportedly urged Real Madrid to raid Chelsea this summer to sign compatriot Marcos Alonso.
According to a report by Spanish publication Don Balon, Real Madrid could step up their pursuit of Marcos Alonso in the summer transfer window. Captain Sergio Ramos has urged club president Florentino Perez to sign the Spaniard to become his next partner at the heart of defence.
Alonso initially came through the ranks at Real Madrid, although he could never establish himself in the first-team setup and subsequently moved to Bolton Wanderers. After a three-year stint at Fiorentina, and a loan spell at Sunderland, the player returned to the Premier League with Chelsea in the summer of 2016.
Over the last two seasons, Alonso has been one of the most consistent players in the Premier League, and is widely regarded as one of the best full/wing-backs in the Premier League. In 43 appearances across all competitions, the Spaniard has bagged seven goals and three assists, while also being a solid customer at the back for Chelsea.
But, his exploits could spell trouble for Chelsea, with the player starting to attract interest from several top clubs in Europe. The line of suitors could soon be spearheaded by Real Madrid, who have previously registered an interest in Alonso and have seen captain Sergio Ramos ask for his recruitment this summer.
Los Blancos do not exactly seem to be in need of a left-back, with Marcelo still going strong. The Brazil international also has an able deputy in Theo Hernandez, who has slowly grown into his new surroundings over the course of the season and has been earmarked by Real Madrid as a long-term solution on the left side of defence.
But, Ramos is eyeing the Chelsea superstar as his next partner at the heart of the Real Madrid defence. Raphael Varane is Ramos’s current central defensive partner, but the Frenchman has been heavily linked with a move away from the Bernabeu.
Beyond Varane, Zinedine Zidane has Nacho and Jesus Vallejo at his disposal. But while Nacho is looked at as a backup option, the latter isn’t deemed ready enough to be a first-choice centre-back by the Real Madrid manager.
While Alonso has previously featured as a centre-back on a few occasions, playing in the position does not come naturally to him, with his traits best served in wide areas. Nevertheless, it looks like Florentino Perez might heed Ramos’s suggestion to make a move for the Chelsea defender in the summer.
Alonso though, recently pledged his future to the West London club, iterating that he is not moving away from Stamford Bridge anytime soon. It now remains to be seen if Real Madrid launch the offensive for the player and if so, he ends up moving away from Chelsea for his former club.
