Liverpool have reportedly stepped up their pursuit of Thomas Lemar, and are on the verge of agreeing a deal for the AS Monaco midfielder.

According to a report by French publication Le 10 Sport, Liverpool have taken major strides in their bid to sign Thomas Lemar. The Reds have steered clear of other suitors for the Frenchman and are on the verge of agreeing a deal with AS Monaco over a summer move.

Lemar became a household name in Europe following a sensational 2016-17 campaign with AS Monaco, when the principality club claimed a shock Ligue 1 triumph. The subsequent summer transfer window made him a highly sought-after player, with Arsenal coming close with a big money deadline day attempt.

But, Monaco rejected the bid and the player has since, failed to match the heights of last season, with just three goals and eight assists in 27 appearances across all competitions in the current campaign. Lemar though, still remains a popular figure in the transfer market, with Liverpool among the suitors who are still interested.

The Reds also attempted to sign Lemar last summer, albeit unsuccessfully so, and have reignited their interest in him following Philippe Coutinho’s departure to Barcelona in the winter. Jurgen Klopp could not find a like for like replacement for the Brazilian in January, and even though Liverpool remain as prolific as ever, the manager is eager to bolster his creative options.

Lemar is, thus, a viable target for Klopp, who could use the Frenchman in different positions, just like Coutinho. Liverpool have now taken massive strides in their bid to sign the player, with negotiations reaching an advanced stage.

In fact, the report goes on to suggest that Liverpool and AS Monaco are on the verge of agreeing the transfer fee, although a concrete figure has not been mentioned. Lemar, himself, is eager for the move as well and is set to give the green light to the transfer.

What remains certain is that Lemar’s time at Monaco will come to an end in the summer, and Liverpool are in the driver’s seat in the race to sign him. It now remains to be seen if the Reds can manage to secure his services, as we edge closer to the summer transfer window.
