Transfer Rumour: Chelsea and Manchester United chase Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski

Chelsea and Manchester United have entered the race to sign prolific striker Robert Lewandowski from Bayern Munich.

Amid rumours that Polish striker Robert Lewandowski is looking to leave Bayern Munich in the summer, a report from the Sun claims that Premier League giants Chelsea and Manchester United have expressed a strong desire in luring him to England.

The rumour mill has been going abuzz with reports of Lewandowski’s possible exit at the end of the season from Bavaria, after the former Borussia Dortmund man appointed super agent Pini Zahavi recently.

The Poland captain has reportedly attracted strong interest from reigning European champions Real Madrid, who are looking to bolster their strike force in the summer. A report from Sky Sports also claims that, along with the two Premier League sides and Real, French heavyweights Paris Saint-Germain could also be monitoring the situation with Edinson Cavani understood to be keen on leaving the club in the summer.

Lewandowski has been in Bundesliga since the summer of 2010, when he joined Borussia Dortmund from homeland club Lech Poznan. The striker enjoyed a prolific four-year spell with Dortmund before switching allegiances to Bayern Munich in 2014 on a free transfer.

Since his move to the Allianz Arena, Lewandowski has enhanced his reputation as one of the most lethal marksmen of the current generation and has broken several records along the way. The 30-year old has netted 139 times in 181 appearances for Die Roten, having already scored 29 goals in the ongoing campaign in 34 matches.

Both Chelsea and Manchester United spent heavily on new strikers this past summer, with the Blues bringing in Alvaro Morata from Real Madrid in a £58 million deal, while the Red Devils signed Romelu Lukaku from Everton for a fee of £75 million.

Moreover, Chelsea went out and signed Frenchman Olivier Giroud in the January transfer window from Arsenal. But, it is understood that the reigning Premier League champions are not happy with their current options – a clear indication of which was provided when manager Antonio Conte dropped both his strikers in the 1-1 draw against Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League. And  they will go all in to try and sign Lewandowski if he becomes available in the summer.

United, on the other hand, also bolstered their attack in the winter window, landing Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal. But, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic set to leave the club at the end of the season, there is a possibility of a new striker coming in at the Old Trafford. And manager Jose Mourinho wouldn’t want to waste an opportunity to sign a player of the ilk of Lewandowski if the chance presents itself.

Lewandowski’s contract runs till the summer of 2021 and Bayern are very much likely to play hardball in the summer if the player does demand to leave. However, it is unlikely that the Polish attacker would move to England, especially if Real Madrid come calling for him.
