Manchester United are reportedly set to offer Luke Shaw a new long-term deal, with his current contract set to expire in eighteen months.

According to a report by Daily Mirror, Luke Shaw seems to have completed a remarkable turnaround at Manchester United. The English defender is set to be handed a new long-term contract by the Premier League heavyweights, with talks set to commence soon.

Shaw joined Manchester United from Southampton in a £27 million deal to then become the most expensive teenager. Since then though, the player has had a stop-start career at Old Trafford, never once managing to become a regular, until now.

The current campaign had also seen Shaw be at the bottom of the pecking order, behind even the likes of Daley Blind and Matteo Darmian, who were makeshift left-backs, as well as Ashley Young, who seemed to have made the left side of the Manchester United defence his own by performing in stunning fashion.

But, after making his first Premier League start of the season in December, Shaw seems to have won over Jose Mourinho, who has had a choice few words for the youngster on several occasions since he took charge at Manchester United in 2016.

Shaw, though, has regained his manager’s faith by performing admirably on the pitch, and has started five of the last seven games for Manchester United. The player has impressed Mourinho and the club’s hierarchy to such an extent that he is now set to offered a new long-term contract by the Red Devils.

Manchester United had already exercised their option to extend Shaw’s current £80,000-a-week deal by one year in 2017. But, they are now taking steps to agree terms over a new contract, with a pay raise before the end of the season.

The move is perhaps also an indication of the trust Mourinho has in Shaw, with Manchester United not choosing to sign a left-back in January. Should he continue progressing at an impressive rate, the player could well fulfil the promise to be the long-term solution at left-back for the club, with Ashley Young in the twilight of his career.

For now though, this represents a remarkable turnaround in fortunes for Shaw, who seemed to be on the verge of being a January casualty to nearly becoming the first-choice left-back for Manchester United in a span of a couple of months.
