Liverpool have reportedly not given up their pursuit of Leon Goretzka, who is rumoured to be on his way to Bayern Munich in the summer

According to a report by Daily Mirror, Liverpool believe that they can still prise Leon Goretzka away from a Schalke on a free transfer in the coming summer transfer window. The German midfielder is reported to have committed his future to Bayern Munich.

Goretzka has become one of the hottest properties in world football at the present moment, with several prominent names in Europe in his pursuit. Another gem in the latest generation of senior footballers in Germany, the player has been acclaimed for his dominance in midfield as well as the fantastic vision that he possesses.

This season, the 22-year-old has seemed to added goals to his repertoire, with four goals in 12 outings across all competitions. But, his future has been the subject of intense speculation for the better part of the last half a year, with Goretzka looking set to call time on his spell at Schalke at the end of the season.

Die Konigsblauen have been attempting to tie the midfielder down to a new deal at Veltins-Arena, even proposing to make him the highest-paid player in the club’s history, but to no avail. Recent reports in Germany have suggested that Goretzka is set to join Bayern Munich in a free transfer in the summer, but the Bavarians could have Liverpool for competition.

Bayern have a gamut of midfielders, with the likes Arturo Vidal, Thiago Alcantara, Javi Martinez, Corentin Tolisso and Sebastian Rudy at Jupp Heynckes’ disposal. A possible move for another midfielder thus, does come as a surprise, although the player is reportedly keen on a move to the Allianz Arena.

Liverpool, like Bayern, have been long-term admirers of the Germany international’s talents. The Reds seem to be in desperate need to bolster their midfield, with Philippe Coutinho joining Barcelona this month.

To add to the Reds’ woes, Emre Can is reportedly set to join Juventus in a free transfer in the summer. With Jordan Henderson and James Milner blowing hot and cold, the need to sign a midfielder is urgent for Liverpool, who have now established contacts with Goretzka’s representatives.

The report suggests that Bayern have already finalised the terms of the deal. But, Liverpool’s interest seems to have turned Goretzka’s head, who is willing to listen to what the Reds could be offering.

What remains certain is that Goretzka is set to call time on his spell at Schalke, although it now remains to be seen if Liverpool can manage to swoop him away to Anfield ahead of Bayern Munich.
