Transfer News: Arsenal set to offer Jack Wilshere a new contract amid Chelsea, Manchester City interest

Arsenal are reportedly set to offer Jack Wilshere a new contract, amid interest from Chelsea and Manchester City for the English midfielder

According to a report by The Sun, Jack Wilshere is the subject of interest from Chelsea and Manchester City. But, Arsenal are eager to keep the English midfielder away from the prying hands of their Premier League rivals, and are preparing to offer him a new contract to secure his future at the Emirates.

Wilshere has long been rated as one of the most exciting young players in England, having progressed through the ranks at Arsenal before making his first-team debut at the nascent age of 16. However, since becoming the youngest ever Premier League debutant for the Gunners, the player has been constantly troubled by a spate of injuries.

So much so, that Wilshere has managed to amass a mere 165 appearances for Arsenal since his debut. A promising campaign on loan with Bournemouth last season though, has signalled a Jack Wilshere renaissance, with the player regaining fitness and much of his top form.

This season, the 25-year-old has only managed five first-team appearances in all competitions for the North London club, with Arsene Wenger choosing to ease him back into regular action. But, with his contract at the Emirates set to run out at the end of the season, clubs are starting to circle around the player.

Chelsea and Manchester City are showing interest in Wilshere, and are keen to secure his services on a Bosman deal next summer. The two clubs are, in fact, set to engage in pre-contract negoatiations in January, when suitors would be free to contact his representatives.

Indeed, widespread reports have claimed that Antonio Conte is keen to add to his options in midfield as the injuries to N’Golo Kante and Danny Drinkwater have exposed the lack of depth in the area. Wilshere is, therefore, a viable target for the Chelsea boss, who will eye several additions next summer.

Meanwhile, Pep Guardiola is believed to be a huge fan of Wilshere’s talents, having publicly admitted to his admiration of the Englishman. With Yaya Toure’s future at the Etihad being uncertain, the player has emerged as an ideal target for the Manchester City boss, who can also potentially be a long-term replacement to David Silva.

However, Arsenal are moving quickly to secure the future of the talented midfielder and secure him to a long-term deal at the Emirates. With the player eager to continue at the North London club, the Gunners are likely to keep Chelsea and Manchester City at bay.

However, Wilshere might seek assurances of first-team football before signing on the dotted line. It now remains to be seen if Arsenal indeed manage to tie the player down to a new contract, or if either of their Premier League rivals succeed in poaching him away from the Emirates.
