Transfer News: Chelsea must cough up £50 million to land Tottenham defender Danny Rose

Chelsea will reportedly have to shell out a staggering £50 million to sign Danny Rose from Tottenham this summer.

According to a report in The Sun, Tottenham are open to selling Danny Rose to Chelsea if they can cough up £50 million to secure his services. The English left-back has also been attracting interest from Manchester United.

Rose’s career has progressed by leaps and bounds following the arrival of Mauricio Pochettino at Tottenham three years ago, evolving into one of the best full-backs in the Premier League during the period.

The 2016/17 season though, was an injury ravaged campaign for Rose, restricting the Englishman to just 21 appearances across all competitions. With the player making his way back from a knee injury, speculation has been rife surrounding his future at the North London club.

Things might have taken a turn for the worse after Rose said in an interview with The Sun that there is a huge pay disparity at Tottenham, with the players receiving far less than what they’re worth. The player also hinted that he’d be open to a move away from the club to win trophies.

The aforementioned comments would provide a huge spring in the step to Manchester United and Chelsea, who have been in hot pursuit of the 27-year-old in recent weeks.

At Manchester United, Jose Mourinho has struggled to field a natural left-back in the absence of Luke Shaw, who has struggled with injury and poor form. The likes of Daley Blind, Matteo Darmian and even Ashley Young have been deployed on the left side of defence to much success.

But, the Portuguese manager has prioritised the addition of a left-back nonetheless, with Rose being a top target. The report suggests that Manchester United are also open to a part-exchange deal that would see Shaw move to Tottenham, although it remains to be seen if Spurs would be willing to accept it.

Meanwhile, Chelsea are reportedly the front-runners to sign Rose, with recent reports claiming that a £40 million bid could be in the offing. With Marcos Alonso being Antonio Conte’s only recognised option for the left wing-back slot, the Blues boss has the urgent need to sign a player for the position.

Rose not only has the experience and the track record to be a top addition for the Premier League champions, but he will also help in boosting the homegrown quota for the club. However, they will need to increase their bid to stand a chance of signing Rose, with Tottenham set to demand £50 million for him.

It also remains to be seen if Mauricio Pochettino is open to selling the player, with Ben Davies as his only recognised left-back beyond the Englishman. The Tottenham boss is unlikely to have enough time to land a top replacement either and could be forced into a panic buy, if Rose departs.

But, with Daniel Levy willing to let go of the player, and with Tottenham docking him two weeks worth of wages, Rose could be on his way out of the North London club. It will now be interesting to see if either Chelsea or Manchester United manage to sign him.
