Tottenham have reportedly stormed into the lead ahead of Liverpool in the race to sign Max Meyer from Schalke in the summer.

According to a report in Football.London, Tottenham are leading Liverpool in the race to sign Max Meyer from Schalke in the summer transfer window. The Germany international is likely to be available for as low as £17 million, with just 12 months remaining on his current deal with the Bundesliga side.

Meyer progressed through the ranks at Schalke before making the senior grade in 2013 at the nascent age of 16. Since then, the player has established himself as one of the most integral components for Die Konigsblauen, and is widely regarded as one of the most promising attackers in Europe.

2016/17 turned out to be a disappointing season for Meyer, though, as he could only notch up 2 goals and 5 assists in 39 appearances across all competitions. Nevertheless, he remains a player tipped for a bright future, especially after starring for Germany in their European Under-21 Championship triumph.

The player also made the official Team of the Tournament, and interest in his services has been on the rise ever since then. And the suitors believed to be the front-runners in his pursuit are two clubs that have been following his progress for a long time – Tottenham and Liverpool.

Tottenham have been quiet in the transfer market thus far with little business done for marquee players. However, Mauricio Pochettino now looks set to kickstart his summer spending by adding Meyer to his squad.

The Spurs boss currently does not have many reliable attacking options at his disposal with Erik Lamela and Moussa Sissoko being inconsistent.

And while Christian Eriksen, Dele Alli and Son Heung-Min have been consistent performers for the North London side, last season served as a reminder that quality in depth goes a long way when you’re competing in the Champions League.

Meanwhile, Liverpool have been fairly busy in the transfer market, having already signed Dominic Solanke and Mohamed Salah in this window. Jurgen Klopp, however, is keen to make further reinforcements in attack in order to mount a sustainable challenge in domestic competitions as well as Europe.

The interest in Meyer, perhaps, also stems from the fact that Philippe Coutinho is being aggressively pursued by PSG and Barcelona, meaning the German starlet could be his replacement in Liverpool’s first-team setup.

The report, though, suggests that Tottenham are the favourites to sign the player, who is set to leave Schalke with less than 12 months remaining on his current deal at Veltins-Arena. And with Meyer likely to be available for as little as £17 million, a deal could be in the offing soon.
