Transfer Rumour: AC Milan ready to stump up €60 million for Real Madrid midfielder James Rodriguez

AC Milan are reportedly eager to sign James Rodriguez, and willing to shell out €60 million for the Real Madrid midfielder in the summer.

According to a report in Spanish publication Don Balon, AC Milan have taken the decisive step in their attempts at signing James Rodriguez. The Rossoneri are set to make an offer worth €60 million to secure the services of the Real Madrid midfielder in the summer transfer window.

James Rodriguez arrived at Real Madrid in the summer of 2014 with the burgeoning reputation of being one of the most exciting young midfielders in Europe following his exploits in the 2014 FIFA World Cup, where he won the Golden Boot.

However, his career at Real Madrid has stuttered ever since Zinedine Zidane was appointed at the helm at the Santiago Bernabeu 18 months ago. This 18-month period has arguably been the worst in Rodriguez’s senior career, as he has fallen down the pecking order and struggled for regular game time.

2016/17 was a season full of struggles for the Colombia international as he managed to start just 18 games in all competitions for Real Madrid. And despite opportunities coming few and far between, 11 goals and 8 assists made for a respectable return for his efforts.

At 25 though, the player is eager to play as much as possible and he, thus, looks set to leave Real Madrid this summer. His next destination? It looks likely to be AC Milan, with the Rossoneri keen to land him in the summer transfer window.

The Serie A heavyweights have been recently bought by a wealthy group of Chinese investors, who are willing to invest heavily in order to see the club return to the top of Italian football.

Having already bought Mateo Musacchio, Franck Kessie, Ricardo Rodriguez and Andre Silva, Vincenzo Montella is set to continue his summer squad overhaul by signing an attacking midfielder. As a result, he has turned his attention towards Rodriguez who, it goes without saying, would add a lot of value to his squad.

Milan are, therefore, set to offer €60 million to secure the player’s services. However, Rodriguez is eager to play in the Premier League with Manchester United, who have also been locked in negotiations with Real Madrid for a while now.

Manchester United, though, are unwilling to pay anything over €40 million for Rodriguez, an amount that Real Madrid will not accept. But, with Rodriguez eager to play for Jose Mourinho next season, it remains to be seen if the two clubs can reach middle ground over a transfer fee, or if Milan can tempt the player to make the summer switch to San Siro.
