Chelsea are reportedly eyeing up a shock summer swoop for Willy Caballero, who was recently released by Manchester City, as the new deputy to Thibaut Courtois.
According to The Sun, Chelsea may be about to swoop in for one of the several players that were recently released by Manchester City. The Blues are resigned to sell Asmir Begovic, who wants to be a starter, and are eyeing a sensational summer move to bring out-of-contract Willy Caballero over to Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea, though, will have to compete with Newcastle, who are eyeing the player as the backup to Tim Krul in their return to the Premier League.
Willy Caballero was brought by Manchester City in the summer of 2014 from Malaga to be Joe Hart’s cover at Etihad and the player has duly obliged, often displacing the first-choices at the club. The player has done an admirable job as the deputy, with 48 appearances in total over the span of 3 seasons for the Citizens.
However, his numbers do not represent quality, with the Argentine managing just 16 shutouts, conceding 55 goals in the process. With Guardiola at the helm and a major squad overhaul expected this summer, the Citizens decided against renewing the veteran’s contract, leaving him to test the Bosman market.

The player has been the subject of interest of Newcastle, who are eyeing the player as a backup as well. However, Chelsea have now entered the race into what could be an enticing proposition for Caballero. The Blues captured the Premier League crown with aplomb this season and will be defending their title next campaign.
Asmir Begovic wants regular football and is expected to depart for Bournemouth soon. Thibaut Courtois, on the other hand, have been riddled with minor injuries from time to time, which makes the addition of a backup even more imperative.
Chelsea do have Eduardo as the third-choice at the club. However, Conte would be keen on adding another goalkeeper in case a crisis emerges in the position. Caballero has Premier League experience and would be a potent and cost-friendly addition to the squad.
Caballero, too, would prefer to be the deputy at Chelsea than Newcastle, with the Blues standing a much better shot at silverware while also providing the allure of Champions League football.
The veteran may just be heading towards Stamford Bridge to bolster their goalkeeping department in what looks like a very clever deal by the Chelsea hierarchy.
