Transfer Rumour: Borussia Dortmund and Hoffenheim interested in summer move for Serge Gnabry

Borussia Dortmund and Hoffenheim are reportedly interested in signing Serge Gnabry from Werder Bremen in the summer.

German publication Bild have reported that former Arsenal winger, Serge Gnabry is being eyed by Borussia Dortmund and Hoffenheim. The Bundesliga duo are ready to make a summer move to land the German starlet from Werder Bremen.

Gnabry joined Arsenal’s youth setup from Vfb Stuttgart in 2011, and made rapid strides in his first year at the North London club to make his senior debut in 2012. However, in the four subsequent years that followed, he never could manage to become a regular in Arsene Wenger’s side.

In all, Gnabry managed just 18 first-team appearances for Arsenal, scoring once and assisting twice. A loan spell with West Bromwich Albion didnt’t work either and the 21-year-old chose to move back to his homeland last summer as he signed a permanent deal with Werder Bremen, despite reports suggesting it was a loan move.

The move has been quite fruitful for Gnabry as he has made 23 appearances in Bundesliga for the club, already bettering his tally from Arsenal significantly, with a return of 10 goals and 2 assists. His stellar performances for Die Werderaner have also seen him make his senior international debut for Germany.

Gnabry’s performances also seem to have caught the eye of two top clubs in Germany, with Borussia Dortmund and Hoffenheim keeping tabs on him, and eager to sign him in the summer transfer window.

Thomas Tuchel already has several attacking players in his squad at Borussia Dortmund, with the likes of Marco Reus, Andre Schurrle, Ousmane Dembele, Shinji Kagawa, Christian Pulisic and Mario Gotze to choose from for three positions.

So, Gnabry’s game time could be affected severely if he joins Dortmund in the summer despite the fitness issues that have been plaguing Reus and Gotze. The upside, though, is that Tuchel has a superb track record of overseeing improvements in youngsters and that could tempt the youngster.

Meanwhile, Hoffenheim manager Julian Nagelsmann is managing one of the most exciting young squads in the German top flight, and his debut season has resulted in the club qualifying for Europe in surprising fashion.

A player like Gnabry would only add more value to his squad and provide the Hoffenheim boss with a long-term solution in attack – just as the 21-year-old is starting to realise his potential.

It now remains to be seen if either of these clubs attempt to make a move for Gnabry in the summer, but one thing’s for sure – the young German has an exciting future ahead of him as he starts to come into his own in the Bundesliga.
