Swansea midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson has welcomed talk of a move to Manchester United or Chelsea

Sigurdsson has been brilliant for Swansea this season and is one of the main reasons Swansea are still in the race for survival. Paul Clement, Swansea’s manager, was full of praise for the Icelandic international recently and insisted he had the quality to play for any of the top clubs in the world.

The midfielder himself admitted he was flattered by his manager’s praise, and while admitting that he was unsure if Clement was just saying that to get the best out of him, he revealed that while he was enjoying his time at Swansea he was still aiming at a move for a big club although he was focused on helping the Swans in their bid for survival.

“Yes, that’s of course, very flattering,” Sigurdsson said, according to Goal. “Maybe he was just trying to give me confidence. Of course, it would be a dream to play for one of these big clubs. Hopefully if I continue doing well for Swansea and Iceland then in the near future, I can play in a big club. I am enjoying being one of the senior players, though. “

“We may be in a tough spot, but I am kind of enjoying the pressure of that. I am trying to make the most of that and help the team to get three points every week. If you look at the bigger picture, with where we were at Christmas and where we are at the moment, we have made a big step towards safety but, of course, it’s a really tough season with a lot more football to be played.”

Sigurdsson spent two seasons with Tottenham from 2012 to 2014 and despite not really being personally culpable for Spurs’ stuttering form in those seasons the move didn’t quite turn out as panned and he was eventually sold back to Swansea.

The Swans have been going through a rough patch for some time now due to both managerial changes as well as personnel changes but Sigurdsson has easily been their most consistent player every since returning to the Liberty stadium.

This season, he has been key to their survival bid and it will not be a surprise if some of the big clubs are monitoring his performances. In 29 matches in the English Premier League, Sigurdsson has picked up an impressive 8 goals and 11 assists for a struggling Swansea side.

Chelsea and Manchester United are both looking for reinforcements this summer and Sigurdsson would represent a good option for them both given his wealth of experience – particularly in the English Premier League.

However, Sigurdsson’s preferred position is behind the striker and both teams have a number of options in that position. Despite this, Chelsea could be tempted to make a move as Sigurdsson’s ability on the ball means he can also function effectively in central midfield.

United could also use the Icelandic international’s qualities and he would represent a brilliant squad option for the Red Devils. With Michael Carrick on his way out, Mourinho could mould Sigurdsson into a deep-lying midfielder much like Carrick, as the Swansea midfielder definitely has the passing ability to fit into that role.

One thing is for sure, if Sigurdsson’s performances continue to impress like they have all season, he will likely be moving on from the Liberty stadium at the end of the season. Where that will be remains to be seen.
