Pep Guardiola defends Aguero after horror challenge on David Luiz

Pep Guardiola has defended Sergio Aguero after the Argentine made a shocking challenge on David Luiz, and has said that he is proud of his team’s efforts

Sergio Aguero was then sent off for a terrible challenge on David Luiz – one of Chelsea’s best performers and a man who had kept Aguero frustrated all evening – sparking a fracas that led to Fernandinho deservedly being dismissed as well, for constantly grabbing Cesc Fabregas by the throat and pushing the Spaniard over the advertising hoardings.

But, speaking after the game, Pep Guardiola bewilderingly felt that Aguero was somewhat unfortunate to be sent off, while claiming he does not understand the referees in England :

“Both players were strong. He went down and touched him. It wasn’t intentional. I don’t think so. Maybe I have to understand many things here with the referees, it was red card. We accept that” he said, according to the Independent

“It’s a pity what happened in the end. Fernandinho went there to defend his team-mate. The opponent went like this to his team-mate. After that, again and again and again it [brawl] happened. It’s a pity it finished like this, it was the way the referee decided. It’s a pity, I don’t like that and I apologise.”

This is not the first time Aguero has made such a challenge on David Luiz, with the striker jumping in two-footed on David Luiz several years ago during the Brazilian’s first spell with Chelsea. The red cards mean that Aguero and Fernandinho will both miss Manchester City’s clash with Arsenal, and Aguero – who received his second red card of the season – gets a minimum ban of 4 matches as it is his second offence.
