Chelsea came into the match needing a win against a resilient Hull City side under the tutelage of former Manchester United coach Mike Phelan. The first half was a very tight affair with Chelsea unable to break the Tigers defence despite having a lot of possession and the two sides went into the half-time without a single goal being scored by either side.

Chelsea seemed to grow into game as the second half started and Hull City finally gave in to the unrelenting Blues pressure as Willian curled a beautiful shot past keeper David Marshall into the corner of the net to hand them the lead around the hour mark. The Blues then doubled the lead within the next 10 minutes as Diego Costa almost replicated Willian’s attempt.
