Zlatan Ibrahimovic led his country out for the final time against Belgium on the 22nd of June 2016. It was the end of an era as the legendary Swede hung up his boots after 116 international caps.

It wasn’t the ending that Ibrahimovic’s fans would have hoped for, but it wasn’t surprising, given Sweden’s lacklustre performances over the course of the competition.

A draw against the Republic of Ireland and a loss to Italy was followed by a defeat at the hands of Belgium, thereby bringing the curtain down on an illustrious international career for the former Barcelona, Juventus, Inter and AC Milan striker.

The striker had announced prior to his side’s last Euro Group stage match that his participation in games for his national side would end at the end of their European Championship run, and tributes in honour of the 34-year-old immediately began pouring in on Twitter.

Volvo made a commercial in honour of their brand ambassador’s international career, which featured his sons Maximilian and Vincent, and his partner Helena Seger. Ibrahimovic, who is expected to sign for Manchester United in the coming weeks, posted this commercial on his Facebook page, saying that it was time for him to ‘hand it over to the next generation’.
