David Raya admits to wanting future La Liga move amid Real Madrid links

David Raya has revealed his desire to play in La Liga at some stage in the future, which could boost Real Madrid’s long-term hopes of signing him.

Raya is currently regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League, and his name has also entered the conversation surrounding the top goalkeepers in Europe. Arsenal have benefited greatly from the form the Spaniard has shown since completing his £27 million move to North London from Brentford.

The transfer initially began as a loan move in 2023, but Arsenal later activated their option to sign him permanently. Raya has since established himself as one of the Premier League’s leading goalkeepers. He has won the Golden Glove award in each of the last three seasons and appears to be on course to claim it for a fourth consecutive campaign.

Raya has been instrumental in helping Arsenal record the best defensive record in the division over the last three seasons, and there is a possibility they could achieve the same feat again this term. Mikel Arteta will not want to imagine his Arsenal team without the Spanish international, despite comments from the goalkeeper indicating that he would like to play in Spain one day.

David Raya reveals La Liga dream

Speaking to MARCA via Sport Witness, Raya suggested that he could be open to moving to La Liga in the future. The goalkeeper insisted that playing in Spain would be an experience he would love to have at some stage of his career, although he remains focused on his current responsibilities with Arsenal.

When asked whether he would like to play in La Liga, Raya said, “Yes, I’d love to, I’d love to experience La Liga. For now, I’m very happy here, but I would definitely like to try playing in the Spanish league. I think it’s a very competitive league. Perhaps, in the future, I could play for a Spanish club. I’m Spanish, and naturally, I’d love to play there.”

Speaking about his current ambitions at Arsenal, Raya remained grounded and insisted that he and his teammates want “to win everything.”

“We want to establish ourselves as favourites, that’s our objective. Hopefully, we can improve on last season by lifting the Champions League trophy, though there’s still a long way to go for that.”

Raya’s comments will alert Real Madrid, who have reportedly shown interest in the goalkeeper. The Spanish giants could view the Arsenal stopper as a potential successor to the formidable Thibaut Courtois.

Should Real Madrid make a move, Raya could be tempted by the opportunity to move to the Santiago Bernabeu. However, there is no concrete indication that a transfer is close, and Arsenal could open talks with the goalkeeper over a new contract.

His current deal expires in 2028, with the club reportedly planning negotiations with Jurrien Timber and Martin Odegaard, among others. Raya could be next in line for discussions.

Arsenal will not want to lose one of their most important players, especially while they remain among the leading teams in England and Europe. Raya is currently happy in North London, but his desire to experience La Liga could become relevant if Real Madrid decides to make a serious approach in the future.
