Chelsea have been handed a boost over Estevao Willian’s future, with the teenager having no intention of forcing an exit from Stamford Bridge.
As per Football Insider, Estevao Willian remains committed to Chelsea despite links over a possible exit. Even though he has managed only 23 minutes of Premier League football this season, the 19-year-old remains patient and is prepared to wait for his opportunity under Xabi Alonso.
That stance will come as welcome news to Chelsea, who continue to hold the Brazil international in extremely high regard. Reports of potential interest elsewhere have not changed his position.
Estevao currently finds himself behind Joao Pedro, Cole Palmer, and Morgan Rogers in Chelsea’s attacking hierarchy. Alonso’s preference for wing-backs has also made opportunities harder to come by, although the youngster has been used in a more advanced midfield role during both Carabao Cup appearances.
An opportunity arises
The picture could now change as Joao Pedro’s injury is expected to keep the Brazilian out until around the middle of October, potentially opening a route into the starting XI for Estevao. It gives him precisely the sort of opportunity he needs: meaningful minutes rather than simply substitute appearances.
The teenager scored eight goals and supplied three assists in all competitions last season, demonstrating that he already has the attacking instincts to make an impact. Chelsea’s position is equally clear. The club have no desire to sell the winger, while Alonso continues to regard him as part of his long-term plans.
Estevao only arrived from Palmeiras last summer for £29 million and was regarded as one of the most exciting young players in world football at the time. A difficult opening to this campaign has done little to change that internal assessment. His recent return from a hamstring injury is another factor. Having missed the World Cup because of the problem, he has needed time to rebuild his fitness.
Onus on player to prove himself
Estevao’s situation is a useful reminder that a lack of starts does not necessarily mean a player has fallen out of favour. Chelsea have an unusually deep attacking group, and Alonso’s tactical setup has further complicated the youngster’s route into the side. But there is an opportunity here that could change everything. With Pedro unavailable, Estevao has a chance to turn patience into momentum.
His ability to play between the lines and attack defenders makes him different from some of Chelsea’s other options, and that variety could become increasingly valuable as the season develops. The key now is not whether he can force his way out, but whether he can force his way into Alonso’s plans. If he gets a genuine run of games, the conversation around his Chelsea future could change very quickly.
