Ethan Wheatley is set to join Lincoln City on a season-long loan from Manchester United, according to Football Insider, with the deal agreed between the clubs. The young forward is still believed to have a future at Old Trafford, which is why Manchester United are considering only a temporary move. A spell in the Championship is viewed as the right pathway for his development.
Wheatley came through Manchester United’s academy and is regarded by many at the club as a player with considerable potential. He has made only four senior appearances in his career, all of them coming in 2024. Three came in the Premier League and one in the EFL Cup, with each appearance coming from the substitutes’ bench.
Manchester United have been carefully managing his development over the past year. Wheatley has already gained experience in League Two and League One, and last season he made 37 League One appearances during loan spells with Northampton Town and Bradford City. The 20-year-old scored three goals during those spells, all of them for Northampton Town.
There had been interest from clubs such as Schalke, who were reportedly considering a permanent move. Everton were also credited with an interest in signing Wheatley outright, but Manchester United have made it clear that he will leave only on loan.
Lincoln City to sign Wheatley
Lincoln City secured promotion to the Championship and would have closely followed Wheatley’s performances in League One last season. Lincoln’s promotion to the Championship aligns with Wheatley’s development trajectory, the second tier offers a platform for a young forward to test himself against established defences.
That explains their interest in the Manchester United striker, with the newly promoted club now close to completing a deal. Wheatley is expected to undergo a medical before finalising his move. The agreement between the clubs is already in place, and the transfer should be completed once the remaining formalities are concluded. After gaining experience in League Two and League One, a move to the second tier appears to be the appropriate next step in his development.
Do Manchester United see a future for Wheatley?
Manchester United have continued to show faith in Wheatley and hope that he can eventually develop into a first-team player. However, this loan could represent an important stage in his career and an opportunity for him to prove that he can compete at a higher level.
Wheatley is under contract with Manchester United until 2028, with the club holding an option to extend the agreement by a further year. That gives the Red Devils time to assess his progress at Lincoln. If Wheatley performs well at Lincoln, he could earn a new contract and a first-team place.
