Newcastle United are making significant progress in their pursuit of Manchester City midfielder Nico Gonzalez, with optimism growing that a deal can be completed this week.
According to Sky Sports, talks between the two Premier League clubs are advancing over a transfer for the 24-year-old, who is valued at around £50 million. Gonzalez is understood to be open to the move to St. James’ Park, and Newcastle are now working to finalise the remaining details.
The midfielder was an unused substitute in Manchester City’s win over Bournemouth on Sunday, further fuelling speculation surrounding his future.
Newcastle make progress in Gonzalez talks
Fabrizio Romano via X has also reported that negotiations have moved forward significantly, with a club-to-club agreement now close. Newcastle are continuing discussions with the player’s representatives over personal terms and hope to complete the deal quickly.
The situation has accelerated after Manchester City indicated they were willing to sanction Gonzalez’s departure. That stance has become easier to understand following City’s agreement to sign Lille midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi for around £86 million, giving Enzo Maresca another major option in the centre of the pitch.
For Newcastle, Gonzalez has emerged as an important target after a summer of major midfield upheaval. Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali have both left St. James’ Park, removing considerable experience and technical quality from Matthias Jaissle’s squad.
Jaissle wants Premier League experience
Newcastle have already invested in younger midfield talent, but Jaissle is understood to want another player who already knows the demands of the Premier League and Gonzalez fits that profile. His spell at Manchester City has not developed as expected after arriving from FC Porto, with competition limiting his opportunities to establish himself as an automatic starter.
However, that does not necessarily diminish his quality as at 24, the Spaniard is still entering his prime and has the physical presence, positional awareness and technical ability to become an important part of Newcastle’s midfield.
A move to St. James’ Park could also provide him with the regular responsibility that has been difficult to secure at the Etihad. This deal increasingly looks like a strong fit for all parties. City have strengthened their midfield with Bouaddi, Gonzalez is open to leaving, and Newcastle urgently need an experienced option after losing Guimaraes and Tonali.
Signed for £50 million just last year, Gonzalaez has struggled to make a splash on a consistent basis at the Etihad. But Newcastle would be buying a player with Premier League experience who should still have his best years ahead of him and if personal terms are settled without complications, this could be one of the more straightforward major deals to conclude before the deadline.
