Andoni Iraola was recently appointed Liverpool’s new head coach, and Rafael Benitez has backed him for success.
Former Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez believes Andoni Iraola possesses the qualities to succeed at Anfield, insisting his compatriot’s attacking philosophy and tactical approach will quickly earn the backing of the club’s supporters.
Iraola has impressed during his time in the Premier League thus far, where he has built a reputation for an energetic, front-foot style of football at Bournemouth. With expectations naturally high at Anfield, Benitez feels his compatriot possesses the right attributes to thrive in one of football’s most demanding jobs.
Benitez told Sky Sports, “Iraola, I think has done really well in Bournemouth and now he has a different challenge. It is a massive club, but I think he has an advantage – he knows the league. The fans will be very supportive, for sure. The way that he wants to play – I think they like that and I think he has great possibilities to do well.”
Benitez, who guided Liverpool to UEFA Champions League glory in 2005 and remains one of the club’s most successful modern managers, believes Iraola has demonstrated enough during his managerial career to justify the faith Liverpool has placed in him.
After making his name in Spain, Iraola enhanced his reputation in England by transforming Bournemouth into one of the Premier League’s most entertaining teams. His high-pressing tactics, quick transitions and emphasis on attacking football attracted widespread praise and eventually earned him the role at Liverpool following the end of the previous managerial era.
Can Iraola handle the pressure at Anfield?
Taking charge of Liverpool presents a significantly different challenge. The Merseyside club will once again be expected to compete for the Premier League title while also making a deep run in the UEFA Champions League. Managing those expectations while implementing a new playing style will be among Iraola’s biggest tasks during his first season.
Benitez, though, believes the Spaniard’s personality will help him navigate the pressure. Having managed some of Europe’s biggest clubs himself, including Liverpool, Chelsea, Real Madrid, and Napoli, the veteran coach understands the demands of elite-level football.
Benitez acknowledged the need to adapt to Anfield’s demands but believes Iraola’s footballing ideas suit Liverpool’s identity. Supporters have traditionally embraced teams that play with intensity, aggression and attacking intent, qualities that have become synonymous with Iraola’s coaching style.
