Arsenal line up summer move for Nico Williams

Arsenal are interested in a summer move for sought-after winger Nico Williams as Mikel Arteta targets a left-sided attacker next.

According to Fichajes, Nico Williams could be a key target for Arsenal ahead of next summer as Mikel Arteta plans on key changes on the left-hand side. The winger is among a host of players the Gunners want in the summer, with one of Leandro Trossard or Gabriel Martinelli expected to move on.

Arsenal made a big splash in the summer window to recruit eight new players who have helped build a solid squad capable of challenging on all fronts. While they strengthened almost all positions on the pitch, the left wing was an area they did not find a solution for.

While Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard have been consistent performers, Mikel Arteta wants a game-changer there. Some big names are being mentioned in media reports of late, including Atletico Madrid’s Julian Alvarez as well as Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon on their wishlist. However, there is another player that has long been of interest to Arsenal.

Nico Williams is that player, with the winger at the centre of a high-profile transfer saga between Athletic Club and FC Barcelona. The latter were closing in on triggering his release clause in the summer, but the 23-year-old Euro 2024 winner’s club offered a massive extension until 2035 with a tremendous pay package, which the winger eventually signed.

While protected by a reported €100 million release clause, only a handful of clubs are in a position to sign him for that price. Arsenal are clearly one of those capable, and they remain a part of many clubs interested in signing Williams in the summer. Arteta could view his compatriot as a priority target for the summer.

Arsenal to chase Nico Williams?

Arsenal are expected to chase a new left winger this summer, and they consider Williams as a top target ahead of the upcoming transfer window. Much will depend on director Andrea Berta and his expertise in negotiating a fee or at least breaking down the €100 million release clause in installments.

Athletic Club are also embroiled in a reported transfer ban from UEFA for breaching certain rules, meaning any sale of Nico Williams will then become difficult if they are sanctioned. For now, Arsenal are set to keep close tabs on the 23-year-old Spaniard ahead of a possible approach in the summer, although they might move on if the winger is unattainable.
