Leeds United eyeing Arouna Sangante swoop after failed West Ham United move

Leeds United will reportedly look to sign 23-year-old Senegalese defender Arouna Sangante from Le Havre in the summer transfer window.

According to a report by TEAMtalk, Arouna Sangante is the subject of interest from Leeds United. The Whites are keen on reinforcing their defensive unit by signing a centre-back in the summer transfer window. So, the 23-year-old Le Havre defender has emerged as a target for the West Yorkshire outfit.

The report has revealed that West Ham United came close to signing the Mbao native in the winter transfer window before Nuno Espirito Santo pulled the plug on a January move. However, the East London club may still be interested in Sangante, and the Le Havre captain might become a target this summer.

Who is Arouna Sangante?

Arouna Sangante has established himself as one of the best young defenders in Ligue 1 this season. Born in Mbao, the 23-year-old arrived in France as a teenage prospect and passed through the academies at Cosmos Saint-Denis and Red Star FC before graduating from the youth division at Le Havre AC.

The Senegalese defender has made nearly 150 appearances for Le Havre thus far while chipping in with eight goals and two assists. Sangante’s exploits have helped him become the Ligue 1 club’s captain, and his progress has piqued the attention of several well-known clubs. Leeds United and West Ham United are among the prospective suitors vying for his signature heading into the summer transfer window.

Premier League move on the horizon?

Arouna Sangante has been on West Ham United’s wishlist for a long time. The East London club came close to signing the Le Havre captain in the winter transfer window before Nuno Espirito Santo pulled the plug on a January deal and turned to Axel Disasi instead. However, the Irons are still keen on signing Sangante, which makes sense, as Max Kilman’s long-term future at the London Stadium is uncertain.

As for Leeds United, Daniel Farke wanted a centre-back in the winter transfer window, with the Whites setting their sights on Danilho Doekhi. With a January deal not materialising, Leeds United will return to the market for a centre-back this summer, and Sangante has emerged as a viable target for the West Yorkshire outfit.

Apart from Leeds United and West Ham, Brentford and Brighton & Hove Albion are also keen on signing the 23-year-old Senegalese defender from Le Havre. It will be interesting to see what the future holds for Sangante amid his exploits for the Ligue 1 club.
