Crystal Palace fail with bid to sign Joel Ordonez

Crystal Palace submitted a bid worth €40 million to sign 21-year-old Ecuadorian international Joel Ordonez from Club Brugge, with the Belgian giants rejecting the offer.

According to a report by Miguel Delaney on The Independent, Joel Ordonez is the subject of interest from Crystal Palace. The Eagles are keen on bolstering their defensive unit by signing a centre-back before the winter transfer window shuts down. So, the 21-year-old Club Brugge powerhouse defender has emerged as a target for the South London outfit.

The latest report has brought bad news for Crystal Palace, as the 2024/25 FA Cup winners have failed with a bid to sign the South American defender from Club Brugge. Crystal Palace offered €40 million to secure Ordonez’s services, but the Belgian giants have rejected the proposal. Meanwhile, Ryan Taylor has revealed that the Blue and Blacks have no interest in selling the youngster today.

How has Joel Ordonez fared at Club Brugge?

Joel Ordonez has established himself as one of the world’s best young defensive prospects since joining Club Brugge from Club NXT in July 2023. The 21-year-old had already been in Europe for a year before moving to the Jan Breydel Stadium, but he has made considerable progress at Club Brugge, making exponential progress in the last two and a half years.

The Ecuadorian international has made over 100 appearances for Club Brugge thus far while chipping in with four goals and two assists. Meanwhile, Ordonez’s exploits for the Belgian giants have not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several well-known outfits. Crystal Palace will be among the prospective suitors vying for his signature on the final day of the winter transfer window.

London calling?

Joel Ordonez has been on Liverpool’s radar for a long time, according to Ryan Taylor. The continued interest is understandable, as the Eagles have been scouring the market for a centre-back heading since selling Marc Guehi to Manchester City. The Englishman’s departure has left a gaping hole in the defensive unit at Selhurst Park.

Several candidates, including Jayden Oosterwolde, have thus emerged on Crystal Palace’s wishlist, with Ordonez also a viable target. However, the Eagles have failed with their bid to sign the 21-year-old Ecuadorian international after offering a bid worth €40 million to Club Brugge.

The Belgian giants have rejected Crystal Palace’s proposal, as they are “determined to keep player” at the Jan Breydel Stadium beyond the winter transfer window. So, the South London outfit must look elsewhere for a new centre-back, as Ordonez will not move to Selhurst Park on Monday.
