Barcelona prioritising 2026 summer move for Julian Alvarez

Barcelona will reportedly prioritise signing 25-year-old Argentine international Julian Alvarez from fellow La Liga club Atletico Madrid next summer.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Julian Alvarez is the subject of interest from FC Barcelona. The reigning La Liga champions are keen on reinforcing their offensive unit by signing a striker next summer amid Robert Lewandowski’s advancing age. So, the 25-year-old Atletico Madrid centre-forward has emerged as a target for the Blaugrana.

The report has suggested that the Catalan giants have identified the South American attacker as their priority target for next summer’s transfer window. However, Barcelona will face stiff competition from Liverpool for Alvarez’s signature, with the Merseyside outfit also keen on landing a versatile forward like him.

Julian Alvarez and his career-defining move

Julian Alvarez has established himself as one of the best players in La Liga since joining Atletico Madrid from Manchester City in a surprise big-money move last year. While the 25-year-old was slightly slow off the blocks at Estadio Metropolitano, he has made significant progress and established himself as a talismanic figure for Los Rojiblancos.

The Argentine international has made an exceptional start to the 2025/26 season, amassing seven goals and four assists in 11 appearances across all competitions. Meanwhile, Alvarez’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several European bigwigs. Barcelona and Liverpool are among the prospective suitors vying for his signature heading into next summer’s transfer window.

A man in demand

Julian Alvarez has been on Barcelona’s radar for a long time. The continued interest makes sense, as Robert Lewandowski is in the twilight of his career. So, the Blaugrana should start planning for life after the veteran Polish striker. Alvarez has thus emerged as the priority target for Barcelona.

As for Liverpool, the Merseyside outfit mulled over signing Alvarez in the summer transfer window before landing Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak. The continued interest is perplexing, considering Arne Slot has a stacked offensive unit with two strikers.

Meanwhile, recent reports have pointed to Liverpool being ahead of Barcelona in the battle for Alvarez’s signature. It will be interesting to see what the future holds for the 25-year-old Argentine international.
