Juventus rival Borussia Dortmund in Renato Veiga chase

Juventus will reportedly compete with Borussia Dortmund to sign 21-year-old Portuguese utility man Renato Veiga from Chelsea.

According to an update by reputed Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Renato Veiga is the subject of interest from Juventus. The Serie A giants have been scouring the market for a centre-back after losing Gleison Bremer to a season-ending knee injury. So, the Chelsea utility man has emerged as a target for the Bianconeri, with Borussia Dortmund also vying for his signature.

Renato Veiga and his frustrating Chelsea stint

Renato Veiga has been a solid performer for Chelsea since arriving from FC Basel in the summer transfer window. While opportunities have come few and far between for the versatile defender, who can play as a centre-back, a left-back and a holding midfielder, his displays have remained consistent.

The 21-year-old has managed only 1,166 minutes of game time across 18 appearances in all competitions while chipping in with two goals and one assist. However, despite his struggles, Veiga’s stock in the market remains high, with several well-known clubs across Europe vying for his signature.

Recent reports have linked the Portuguese utility man with Marseille, Lazio and Wolverhampton Wanderers. However, Borussia Dortmund and Juventus want to beat the competition to the wantaway Chelsea defender’s signature after initiating discussions with the West London club.

What next?

Borussia Dortmund’s interest in Renato Veiga is understandable. Niklas Sule has blown hot and cold in the last few years, compelling the Bundesliga club to scour the market for a centre-back. In addition, the Chelsea utility man can be an option for the left-back berth, adding to Ramy Bensebaini’s competition.

As for Juventus, Gleison Bremer will not play again after picking up a season-ending knee injury a few months ago. In addition, Danilo will likely leave the Serie A club in the winter transfer window. So, Veiga has emerged as a viable target, with Juventus opening talks to sign the young defender from Chelsea.

The 21-year-old Portuguese utility man has reportedly approved a move to Borussia Dortmund, and he wants to leave Chelsea to secure regular game time as a centre-back elsewhere. It will be interesting to see if Juventus can win the race for his signature in the coming days.
