Mathys Tel not convincned about Chelsea move

Bayern Munich attacking whizkid Mathys Tel reportedly has reservations about joining Chelsea amid concerns about game time.

According to a report by Graeme Bailey on TBR Football, Mathys Tel is the subject of interest from Chelsea. The Blues are scouring the market for a versatile attacker amid uncertainties surrounding Christopher Nkunku’s long-term future. So, the 19-year-old Bayern Munich whizkid has emerged as a target, although he has reservations about joining the West London outfit.

Mathys Tel and his career so far

Mathys Tel has had to bide his time since joining Bayern Munich from Stade Rennais in July 2022. A native of Sarcelles, the Frenchman spent most of his formative years in his homeland, passing through the academies at five clubs and graduating from the youth division at Stade Rennais.

The 19-year-old has made considerable impact at Bayern Munich in the last two and a half years. However, Tel has been a backup attacker for the Bundesliga giants throughout his spell at the Allianz Arena, and he has not even managed 500 minutes of game time in 12 appearances across all competitions.

Despite his struggles for game time, Tel’s stock in the market remains high. Premier League clubs, in particular, are keen on signing the French youth international, with Chelsea among the prospective suitors in the winter transfer window.

London calling?

Chelsea’s interest in Mathys Tel is surprising yet understandable. The Blues are keen on signing a striker, even though Nicolas Jackson and Marc Guiu have been impressive this season. They are eager to land a versatile attacker who can play across the frontline. So, Tel has emerged as a viable target for Chelsea.

However, the Premier League heavyweights have encountered a roadblock in the race to secure the Frenchman’s services, as he has reservations about joining the West London outfit. Tel wants assurances of game time at Chelsea after struggling to take the field in the first half of the 2024/25 season.

Offloading Christopher Nkunku will boost Tel’s case, and Chelsea might have to sell the former RB Leipzig star before landing the Bayern Munich whizkid. It will be interesting to see how the links between the 19-year-old French wonderkid and Chelsea grows in the coming days.
