Barcelona will compete with Liverpool and Tottenham to sign 21-year-old Dutch full-back prospect Devyne Rensch from Ajax.
According to a report by Spanish outlet SPORT, Devyne Rensch is the subject of interest from FC Barcelona. The Catalan giants are scouring the market for a right-back ahead of the two transfer windows next year. However, the Blaugrana will face stiff competition from Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur for the 21-year-old Ajax full-back prospect.
The Devyne Rensch tale
Devyne Rensch is one of the brightest young prospects in his homeland. A native of Lelystad, the Dutchman began his youth career at VV Unicum before joining Ajax in 2016. He has gone from strength to strength in the last eight and a half years, progressing through the ranks at the Eredivisie club before breaking into the first-team squad.
Rensch made his first-team bow for Ajax as a 17-year-old in November 2020 and has grown in stature in the last four years. The 21-year-old is now a mainstay at the back for the Dutch giants, turning out nearly 150 times thus far for the club while chipping in with ten goals and 12 assists. The youngster’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of high-profile clubs like Liverpool, Tottenham, and Barcelona.
A man in demand
The Dutch full-back prospect has been on Liverpool’s radar for a long time. The continued interest in the Ajax defensive mainstay is understandable, considering Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk face an uncertain future at Anfield. With Rensch capable of playing across the backline, he has emerged as a viable target for Liverpool.
Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur’s interest in Devyne Rensch makes sense. The North London giants are in a spot of bother over the long-term future of Pedro Porro amid his links with Real Madrid. In addition, they need a new centre-back amid uncertainties surrounding the long-term future of Ben Davies. So, the Ajax defender is an option worth considering for Tottenham.
As for Barcelona, a new right-back is the need of the hour at the club. While Jules Kounde has been a revelation as a right-back, he prefers playing as a centre-back. In addition, Rensch can be an option for every position in the backline, making the Dutchman a viable target for Barcelona.
With Barcelona entering the picture, the equation in the race to secure the services of the Dutch full-back prospect changes dramatically. It will be interesting to see where the 21-year-old Ajax sensation lands if he leaves the Eredivisie giants next year.
