Manchester United prioritise left-back signing for January window

Ben Chilwell and Alvaro Fernandez Carreras are reportedly the top targets for Manchester United, with the Red Devils prioritising signing a left-back in January.

According to a report by Caught Offside, Manchester United will prioritise signing a left-back in the January transfer window. The Red Devils have identified their top targets to reinforce the position, with Chelsea misfit Ben Chilwell and former academy ace Alvaro Fernandez Carreras on top of their wishlist.

Ben Chilwell, Alvaro Carreras and their situation

Ben Chilwell has seen his career come to a stuttering halt since Enzo Maresca took over as the new manager at Chelsea a few months ago. The Englishman has become “persona non grata” at the West London club, managing only 45 minutes of game time in his only outing this season after they failed to part ways with him in the summer transfer window.

As for Alvaro Fernandez Carreras, the Spaniard has found a stable footing since leaving Manchester United. SL Benfica initially signed him on loan in the January transfer window before completing a permanent move this past summer. The Spaniard has been a mainstay at the back for the Primeira Liga club, turning out 16 times while chipping in with two goals and two assists.

Meanwhile, Chilwell’s situation and Carreras’s progress have not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several well-known clubs across Europe, including Manchester United. The Red Devils are prioritising signing a left-back in the January transfer window, with the duo being their top targets.

Manchester United interested in duo

Manchester United’s interest in Ben Chilwell and Alvaro Fernandez Carreras is understandable. The left-back spot has been a problem area for the Premier League heavyweights since the start of the 2024/25 season, with Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia barely featuring due to their persistent fitness issues.

So, it behoves Manchester United to invest in a left-back in the January transfer window, especially considering Ruben Amorim prefers a player who can make his mark in the final third. Chilwell and Carreras have thus emerged as viable targets for the Premier League outfit.

With Chelsea ready to cash in on Chilwell in January, a cut-price move for the Englishman might be on the cards. As for Carreras, the Spanish full-back will not cost a bomb, with the Red Devils having a buyback clause worth €20 million in their agreement with Benfica.
