Donyell Malen on Barcelona radar

La Liga heavyweights Barcelona are reportedly interested in signing 25-year-old Dutch attacker Donyell Malen from Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund.

According to a report by Spanish outlet SPORT, Donyell Malen is the subject of interest from FC Barcelona. The Catalan giants are scouring the market for a wide attacker ahead of the two transfer windows next year. So, the 25-year-old Borussia Dortmund attacker has emerged as a target for the Blaugrana.

Donyell Malen and his career so far

Donyell Malen has endured a rollercoaster ride since joining Borussia Dortmund from PSV Eindhoven in July 2021. A native of Wieringen, the Dutchman spent most of his formative years in his homeland, although he was in the youth division at Arsenal for two years. However, he rose in prominence during his spell with PSV Eindhoven.

While the 25-year-old has shown flashes of brilliance during his spell with Borussia Dortmund, he has not been consistent enough to become a pivotal figure for the Bundesliga giants. That has been the case this season, with Malen managing only four goals and one assist in 14 appearances across all competitions for the Black and Yellows thus far.

However, Malen’s stock in the market remains high, with several high-profile clubs keen on signing him. Premier League clubs have shown interest in the 39-cap Netherlands international this year. However, the Borussia Dortmund attacker’s next destination might be La Liga, with FC Barcelona among his prospective suitors.

La Liga adventure next?

Barcelona’s interest in Donyell Malen is somewhat surprising. Considering the Blaugrana will likely part ways with Ferran Torres before signing a replacement, the Borussia Dortmund forward does not fit the bill, with Torres having a better output during his spell with the club.

Nevertheless, Torres faces an uncertain future at FC Barcelona amid his links with Premier League clubs. So, the Catalan outfit might have to dip into the market to sign a replacement, with Malen emerging as a target. The Dutchman is reportedly willing to accept a supporting role instead of demanding a starting position.

That makes the 25-year-old forward an appealing target for Barcelona. In addition, the 39-cap Netherlands international should not cost a bomb, considering he will enter the final 12 months of his contract with Borussia Dortmund when the summer transfer window opens next year.
