Manchester United submit enquiries to sign Ruben Amorim

Manchester United have reportedly enquired about the situation of 39-year-old Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim, a target for Manchester City.

According to an update by reputed German journalist Florian Plettenberg, Ruben Amorim is the subject of interest from Manchester United. The Sporting CP manager is also a target for Manchester City as they sweat over the long-term future of Pep Guardiola. However, the Red Devils have already submitted an enquiry for the 39-year-old tactician.

The rise and rise of Ruben Amorim

Ruben Amorim has established himself as one of the best young managers in the world in the last few years. A native of Lisbon, he was a midfielder during his time as a footballer and turned out for SL Benfica for nearly a decade while representing Portugal 18 times. However, he retired early in 2017 and entered the managerial sphere in 2018 by taking charge of Casa Pia.

Amorim’s stock soared during his short spell with SC Braga before Sporting CP came calling in 2020. Since then, the 39-year-old has overseen a successful period for the Primeira Liga giants, delivering two league titles and three other trophies in the last four years.

Things look promising for Amorim’s charges thus far in the 2024/25 season, with Sporting CP sitting atop the Primeira Liga standings. So, it is hardly surprising that the Portuguese tactician has emerged as a target for several high-profile clubs across Europe, with Manchester City and Manchester United vying for his signature.

Premier League move on the horizon?

Manchester City’s interest in Ruben Amorim is understandable. The Premier League champions are in a spot of bother over the long-term future of Pep Guardiola, with the former Barcelona manager mulling over a departure. So, Amorim has emerged as a viable target, especially after Hugo Viana joined Manchester City from Sporting CP.

As for Manchester United, Erik ten Hag faces an uncertain future at Old Trafford after a dreadful start to the 2024/25 season. While the Red Devils remain committed to the Dutchman for now, they are keeping their options open and have enquired about Amorim’s situation.

However, the 39-year-old does not want to leave Sporting CP midway through the season as he has “big ambitions” with Sporting CP this term. In addition, the Portuguese tactician’s contract has a release clause that comes into the equation next summer. So, a move might only see the light of day after the 2024/25 season ends.
