Premier League champions Manchester City are eager to cash in on out-of-favour 28-year-old English midfielder Kalvin Phillips next summer.
According to a report by Give Me Sport, Kalvin Phillips does not have a long-term future at Manchester City. The Premier League champions are keen on offloading the out-of-favour 28-year-old midfielder in the 2025 summer transfer window and get his £150,000-a-week wages off their books.
The rise and fall of Kalvin Phillips
Kalvin Phillips was among the best midfielders in the Premier League when he joined Manchester City from Leeds United in July 2022. The Englishman had been a pivotal figure for Leeds United and helped the West Yorkshire outfit remain in the Premier League in the 2021/22 season. However, he has failed to make his mark thus far for Manchester City.
The 28-year-old has managed only 914 minutes of game time across 31 appearances thus far for Manchester City. In addition, a loan spell with West Ham United in the second half of the 2023/24 season did not work out. However, Phillips hopes to resurrect his stuttering fortunes after joining Ipswich Town on a season-long deal in the summer transfer window.
The English midfielder is gradually growing in stature at Ipswich Town, amassing 227 minutes of game time in three outings thus far. However, it is unclear if the Tractor Boys want to complete a permanent move in the 2025 summer transfer window, although that will depend on Kalvin Phillips’s performances in the 2024/25 season.
What next?
Recent reports have insisted that Manchester City will not recall Kalvin Phillips from his loan spell with Ipswich Town in January despite losing Rodri to a long-term knee injury that has likely ended the Spaniard’s season. So, the Englishman will likely remain at Portman Road for the rest of the 2024/25 season unless the Tractor Boys abruptly end the loan spell.
As for Manchester City, they are keen on offloading Phillips in the 2025 summer transfer window and ending his disastrous three-year stint with them. The Premier League champions want to get his £150,000-a-week wages off their books.
Manchester City will hope Phillips enjoys an excellent campaign on loan at Ipswich Town and compels prospective suitors, including the Tractor Boys, to launch the offensive for him next year. It will be interesting to see if the Citizens can get the 28-year-old English midfielder’s £150,000-a-week wages off their books.
