Manchester City considering January move for Adam Wharton

Manchester City will reportedly look to sign 20-year-old Crystal Palace midfield mainstay Adam Wharton after Rodri picked up a long-term injury.

According to a report by TEAMtalk, Adam Wharton is the subject of interest from Manchester City. The Premier League champions are scouring the market for a top-class midfielder after Rodri picked up a long-term knee injury this past weekend against Arsenal. The 20-year-old Crystal Palace midfielder has thus emerged as a target for the Citizens.

The rapid rise of Adam Wharton

Adam Wharton has established himself as one of the best young prospects in the Premier League since joining Crystal Palace from Blackburn Rovers earlier this year. The Englishman hit the ground running at Selhurst Park, going from strength to strength in the second half of the 2024/25 season.

A mainstay in the middle of the park for Crystal Palace, the 20-year-old has turned out 22 times thus far for the South London club while chipping in with four assists. In addition, Wharton’s exploits for the Eagles helped him earn a spot in England’s squad at UEFA Euro 2024, and he made his international bow in June.

While Wharton did not feature at UEFA Euro 2024, he has a bright future with the Three Lions. In addition, the English midfielder’s progress has captured the attention of several Premier League bigwigs, including Manchester City.

Manchester City want Wharton

Manchester City’s interest in Adam Wharton is understandable. The Premier League champions briefly considered launching the offensive to sign the Englishman in the summer transfer window before deciding against it. With Rodri picking up a long-term knee injury that has likely sidelined him for the remainder of the 2024/25 season, Manchester City can do with a new midfielder.

Recent reports have claimed that the Citizens will dip their toes in the market for a holding midfielder in the January transfer window. Wharton has thus emerged as a viable target for Manchester City, although Crystal Palace will demand a premium to part ways with him this coming winter.

Signing the 20-year-old English midfielder will be a tall order, even though the opportunity to play for Manchester City appeals to most players. It will be interesting to see if the Premier League champions land him in the coming weeks.
