Manchester United held talks to sign Denzel Dumfries this summer

Manchester United briefly held negotiations to sign 28-year-old Dutch full-back Denzel Dumfries from Serie A club Inter Milan in the summer transfer window.

According to a report by Caught Offside, Denzel Dumfries was the subject of interest from Manchester United in the summer transfer window. The Premier League heavyweights held talks to sign the Dutchman. However, the negotiations did not progress much, with Inter Milan hoping to tie him to a new short-term contract at San Siro.

The Denzel Dumfries story

Denzel Dumfries has established himself as one of the best wing-backs in Serie A since joining Inter Milan from PSV Eindhoven in August 2021. The Dutch right-back has not been the undisputed first-choice right wing-back for the Nerazzurri, but he has made his mark whenever he has taken to the field.

The 28-year-old played his part as Inter Milan won the Serie A title in the 2023/24 season. Dumfries has turned out nearly 150 times thus far for the Nerazzurri while chipping in with 11 goals and 20 assists. However, the player faces an uncertain future at San Siro after entering the final 12 months of his contract.

Meanwhile, Denzel Dumfries’s situation has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several well-known clubs. Recent reports have claimed that Newcastle United might launch the offensive to sign the Dutchman in the January transfer window. However, he could have joined Manchester United this past summer.

Manchester United considered signing Dumfries

The report has revealed that Manchester United briefly held talks to sign Denzel Dumfries from Inter Milan in the summer transfer window. Some outlets also suggested that the two clubs discussed a swap deal involving Aaron Wan-Bissaka. However, a move did not materialise, with Wan-Bissaka joining West Ham United.

As for Dumfries, he remained at Inter Milan, although his contract situation has piqued the attention of several prospective suitors. However, the report by Caught Offside has suggested that the Serie A giants want to tie the 28-year-old Dutchman to a new contract.

However, instead of handing the former PSV Eindhoven star another four-year deal, the Nerazzurri will prefer a short-term contract. It will be interesting to see how the negotiations between the parties progress and whether Manchester United will rekindle the move to sign the Dutch right-back in 2025.
