Everton and Newcastle United are reportedly vying for Arthur Melo, with the Toffees the front-runners to sign the 27-year-old Juventus defender this summer.
According to a report by Italian outlet Tuttosport, Everton and Newcastle United are among the clubs looking to take Arthur Melo back to the Premier League in the summer transfer window. However, the Toffees are the front-runners to sign the 27-year-old midfielder from Juventus.
The Arthur Melo misery
Arthur Melo has struggled for stability in the last few years, although he found a semblance of it in the 2023/24 season. The Brazilian midfielder would have hoped for greatness after joining FC Barcelona from Gremio in July 2018. However, the dream turned into a nightmare in a short time, with the Blaugrana selling him to Juventus in September 2020.
The 27-year-old struggled to stamp his authority at Juventus before Liverpool signed him on loan in September 2022. However, he did not feature even once for the Premier League club before returning to Juventus last summer. Fiorentina then secured Arthur’s services on another temporary deal.
The former Barcelona midfielder would have heaved a sigh of relief at Fiorentina after turning out 48 times, with the player chipping in with two goals and four assists in those outings. Meanwhile, Arthur’s progress in the 2023/24 season has piqued the attention of several Premier League clubs, including Everton and Newcastle United.
Premier League return on the cards?
Newcastle United recently joined the race to sign Arthur Melo from Juventus. The Tyneside club’s interest in the Juventus midfielder is understandable, considering they have sold Elliot Anderson, while Sean Longstaff faces an uncertain future at St. James’ Park. So, the 27-year-old has emerged as a viable target for Newcastle United.
However, the Magpies have fallen behind Everton in the chase. The Toffees have considered a move to secure Arthur’s services for several weeks. They will part ways with Amadou Onana in the summer transfer window, with the Brazilian midfielder emerging as a viable target to replace the Belgian international.
Everton might have leapfrogged Newcastle United in the race to bring the Juventus midfielder back to the Premier League. But they must intensify their efforts to land the 27-year-old, with the job only half done thus far.
