Veteran Barcelona midfielder Oriol Romeu could rejoin his former club, Girona, in the summer transfer window.
According to a report by Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, Oriol Romeu is the subject of interest from Girona. The White and Reds are keen on re-signing the veteran Barcelona midfielder in the summer transfer window, with Michel and sporting director Quique Carcel being fans of what he brings to the table.
Oriol Romeu and his Barcelona frustrations
Oriol Romeu endured a frustrating 2023/24 campaign after rejoining Barcelona from Girona last summer. A native of Ulldecona, the Spaniard began his youth career in his hometown club but graduated from Barcelona’s fabled La Masia division. However, he rose in prominence after moving to England, with his spell with Southampton helping him find a stable footing.
The 32-year-old returned to Spain nearly two years ago by joining Girona from Southampton. He was one of the best midfielders in La Liga in his first season back in his homeland. Romeu’s exploits for Girona did not go unnoticed, with Barcelona re-signing him in a low-money deal last summer.
While the veteran Spanish midfielder began the 2023/24 season well, his stock gradually fell. Romeu turned out 37 times for Barcelona this term but managed only 1,435 minutes of game time. So, the experienced midfielder’s Barcelona future is uncertain, and the Catalan giants are ready to cash in on him in the summer transfer window.
Where next?
A return to Girona might be on the cards for Oriol Romeu, with Michel and Quique Carcen pushing for his signature heading into the summer transfer window. Girona’s midfield unit might lose Aleix Garcia ahead of the 2024/25 season amid his links with Barcelona and Bayer Leverkusen. So, it behoves the high-flying La Liga club to delve into the market for a new midfielder.
Romeu has thus emerged as a viable target for Girona. With Barcelona ready to part ways with the veteran Spanish midfielder, it will be interesting to see if a return to Estadi Montilivi sees the light of day.
Recent reports have also linked the 32-year-old with Napoli. However, a return to Girona is seemingly more feasible, considering Romeu is entering the final phase of his career.
