Ferland Mendy poised to sign new Real Madrid contract until 2027

Ferland Mendy will reportedly extend his stay at Real Madrid by two years, committing to a contract until June 30, 2027.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Bernabeu Digital, Real Madrid and Ferland Mendy should agree to a contract extension of two years in the coming weeks. The Merengues are yet to open talks with the 28-year-old defensive mainstay. However, with the left-back settled and happy at the Santiago Bernabeu, the discussions will likely progress smoothly.

Ferland Mendy and his Real Madrid career so far

Ferland Mendy has been the undisputed first-choice left-back for Real Madrid since arriving from Lyon in a deal worth €48 million in July 2019. The Frenchman was one of the best left-backs in Ligue 1 when he joined Los Blancos half a decade ago. And he has been a solid performer for Real Madrid in the last five years.

There was a time when there were concerns surrounding Mendy’s fitness after he sustained persistent muscle injuries. However, the 28-year-old has shrugged off those issues to become a mainstay on the left flank for Real Madrid. The player has turned out 166 times thus far for the newly-crowned La Liga champions, chipping in with six goals and ten assists.

Meanwhile, despite his improving fitness levels, reports have suggested that Mendy faces an uncertain future at Real Madrid. With Los Blancos looking to sign Alphonso Davies from Bayern Munich, it is hardly surprising that the French international does not have a secure spot at the club heading into the 2024/25 season.

What next for Mendy?

Real Madrid’s left-back conundrum has been a hot topic of debate, with the club also showing interest in re-signing Miguel Gutierrez. So, that can potentially leave the newly-crowned La Liga champions with four left-backs. However, they will unlikely part ways with Ferland Mendy in the summer transfer window.

The report by Bernabeu Digital has claimed that Real Madrid will extend Mendy’s contract by two years, taking his current terms to 2027. While talks between the two parties have not begun, the Merengues are confident of tying the Frenchman to the new contract.

Securing two more years of Mendy’s future means Real Madrid can afford to postpone the move for Davies for another year. So, it will be interesting to see who the two left-backs for Real Madrid will be heading into the 2024/25 season.
