Newcastle United run rule over Conor Gallagher

Newcastle United recently dispatched scouts to watch 24-year-old Chelsea midfield mainstay Conor Gallagher in action.

According to a report by Chronicle Live, Conor Gallagher is the subject of interest from Newcastle United. The Magpies are scouring the market for a midfielder amid uncertainties surrounding the future of Bruno Guimaraes. The Chelsea mainstay has thus emerged as a viable target for the Tyneside outfit heading into the summer transfer window.

Conor Gallagher and his situation

Conor Gallagher has done well to establish himself as a mainstay in the middle of the park for Chelsea after embarking on a few loan spells away from the club. The 24-year-old has been with the West London outfit for over a decade and a half but had to embark on four loan stints before becoming a regular for the first team.

The English international is now one of the vice-captains for Chelsea, with only Ben Chilwell and captain Reece James ahead of him in the leadership pecking order. Meanwhile, Gallagher has enjoyed a solid 2023/24 campaign, contributing to 13 goals in 42 appearances across all competitions. He has found the back of the net five times while providing eight assists.

However, Gallagher’s long-term future at Chelsea is uncertain as he has entered the final 15 months of his contract. With talks over a new deal not progressing, the Blues are reportedly unsure about the Englishman staying at Stamford Bridge beyond the summer transfer window. Meanwhile, the player has emerged as a target for Newcastle United.

Newcastle United interested in Gallagher

Newcastle United’s interest in Conor Gallagher is understandable. The Magpies are sweating over the long-term future of Bruno Guimaraes amid their struggles to balance their books. With sanctions regarding the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules possible, Newcastle might have to sell one or two high-value assets.

Gallagher has emerged as a viable target, especially considering he currently pockets £50,000-a-week wages at Chelsea. Meanwhile, signing the Englishman will set Newcastle United back by around £40 million, making him an attractive target. And the Magpies have recently scouted the 24-year-old.

However, Newcastle United will face stiff competition from Tottenham, with the North London club chasing the Chelsea mainstay for over a year. It will be interesting to see if Newcastle can beat the other suitors to the signature of the English international.
