Barcelona considering Jorrel Hato as Ronald Araujo replacement

La Liga champions Barcelona are reportedly contemplating signing Jorrel Hato if they sell Ronald Araujo in the summer transfer window.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Mas Fichajes, Jorrel Hato is the subject of interest from Barcelona. The reigning La Liga champions are scouring the market for a centre-back amid uncertainties surrounding the future of Ronald Araujo. Meanwhile, the highly-rated Ajax defender is also a target for Arsenal.

The Rise of Jorrel Hato

Jorrel Hato is the latest sensation to emerge from Ajax’s fabled youth division. A native of Rotterdam, the 18-year-old began his youth career in his hometown, representing Sportclub Feyenoord and Sparta Rotterdam before joining Ajax in 2018. Since then, he has come leaps and bounds, becoming a mainstay at the back for the Dutch giants despite his nascent years.

The youngster has also broken into the Dutch national team, making his debut in the most recent international break. The defensive sensation has turned out 38 times thus far this term, chipping in with a goal and three assists. Meanwhile, Hato’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several high-profile clubs across Europe.

High in Demand

Widespread reports have linked the Dutchman with many Premier League bigwigs, including Arsenal. But La Liga heavyweights are also showing interest in the teenage wonderkid, with recent updates also linking him with Real Madrid. Hato has now emerged as a target for Barcelona.

Barcelona’s interest in Jorrel Hato is understandable. The Catalan club’s financial issues might force them to consider selling high-value assets in the summer transfer window. So, the futures of Ronald Araujo and Jules Kounde are uncertain. And the Dutch prospect can be a long-term replacement for either player.

As for Arsenal, the Gunners do not necessarily need a centre-back. But Jakub Kiwior faces an uncertain future at the Emirates, while some signs have pointed to Gabriel Magalhaes not being an undisputed first-choice central defender. So Hato is a viable target for Arsenal.

However, Barcelona’s entry into the equation complicates matters for Arsenal heading into the summer transfer window. But with the Dutch defensive sensation recently signing a new contract, Ajax’s bargaining power is strong. So, a summer move might not see the light of day.
