Barcelona will not launch the offensive to sign 32-year-old Italian international Jorginho from Arsenal with a last-ditch bid.
According to a report by Spanish outlet SPORT, Jorginho has been the subject of interest from Barcelona. But the Blaugrana will not launch the offensive to sign the Arsenal midfielder in the January transfer window. The reigning La Liga champions do not have the funds or any scope on the Financial Fair Play front to sign any players this month.
Jorginho at Arsenal: The Story So Far
Jorginho has been a solid backup option for Arsenal since arriving from Chelsea in a surprise winter move last year. The Italian international had enjoyed a superb stint with the West London club for nearly half a decade, winning the UEFA Champions League with them.
The 32-year-old has mainly been a backup option for Mikel Arteta, with game time coming at a premium this season. But he has given a good account of himself in his 930 minutes of action, chipping in with one goal and one assist in 20 appearances thus far. But Jorginho’s long-term Arsenal future is uncertain.
The experienced midfielder has entered the final six months of his contract with the North London club. So, the January transfer window is Arsenal’s last chance to recoup something from Jorginho’s sale. Such a situation had captured the attention of Barcelona, who had been scouring the market for a cost-effective midfield solution.
Barcelona Considered a Move
The reigning La Liga champions have endured a difficult 2023/24 season, even though they have cleared the UEFA Champions League group-stage test. But they failed to win the Supercopa de Espana, are out of the Copa del Rey, and lagging in the title race behind Girona and Real Madrid.
So, January signings can help galvanise the Barcelona squad. But the Catalan giants do not have the funds to sign any new players. In addition, they do not have any leeway on the Financial Fair Play, even for a loan move. So, Barcelona will not land anyone this month, with a move for Jorginho not on the cards.
But Jorginho has no shortage of suitors, with a summer return to Serie A on the horizon. The 32-year-old will likely leave Arsenal as a free agent before embarking on an adventure in Italy. As for Barcelona, they will likely wait until the summer to add new players to the first-team squad.
