Manchester City advance move to sign Matija Popovic

Premier League champions Manchester City have advanced talks to sign 17-year-old German-born Serbian sensation Matija Popovic.

According to a report by Football Insider, Matija Popovic is the subject of interest from Manchester City. The German-born Serbian sensation is also a target for other European bigwigs, including AC Milan. But the Premier League champions are in advanced talks to sign the Partizan Belgrade prodigy.

Who is Matija Popovic?

Matija Popovic was born in Altotting in Germany but has spent his formative years thus far in Serbia. The 17-year-old has been with FK Partizan Belgrade since November 2021 and has risen through the ranks at the Serbian club. His exploits in age-group football in the country helped him appear on The Guardian’s illustrious list of the best young players in the world.

The German-born Serbian wonderkid currently plies his trade for Partizan Belgrade’s Under-19 side. On the international stage, Popovic turns for the Under-17 team, with his performances capturing the attention of many high-profile clubs across Europe.

Meanwhile, the teenage sensation is in the final month of his contract with Partizan Belgrade, which has added to his allure. Recent reports claimed that he was closing in on joining AC Milan. But Manchester City might put a spanner in the works for the Serie A heavyweights.

Manchester City Calling?

Football Insider has claimed that the Premier League champions have advanced talks to sign the 17-year-old German-born attacking sensation. They have reportedly offered a deal that is a “major” contract. That might suggest that Manchester City might be in the pole position to land Matija Popovic.

The Premier League champions have not shied away from giving game time to young prospects if Pep Guardiola deems them worthy of regular action. Rico Lewis is the latest beneficiary of the Manchester City manager’s outlook. So, with Manchester City in advanced talks with his entourage, a deal might be on the cards.

It will be interesting to see if AC Milan or the other suitors can steal a march on Manchester City. For now, though, the treble winners have jumped to the front of the queue to land the 17-year-old German-born Serbian attacking sensation in January.
