Newcastle United in advanced talks to sign Kalvin Phillips

Newcastle United have held advanced talks with Manchester City to sign Kalvin Phillips on loan, with Juventus rivalling the Magpies.

According to Team Talk, Newcastle United are engaged in advanced negotiations with Manchester City to sign Kalvin Phillips on loan. The Magpies aren’t the only option for the £45 million Premier League winner, with Juventus competing to bring the England international to Turin.

The Kalvin Phillips transfer speculation could have an interesting twist as the January window approaches closer. Manchester City have no problems in letting the midfielder depart in January, with the £45 million Premier League winner keen on regular game time ahead of the Euros.

Hence, any decision on a new club will depend on where Phillips gets to play regularly, as he seeks guarantees about it. Juventus have shown an interest for many weeks now, and recently, Fabrizio Romano insisted they had opened talks with Manchester City about a loan deal.

Manchester City are keen on a loan with an obligation to buy clause in it, something that’s still up for debate. Juventus are keen to bolster their midfield and prefer Phillips over other targets. While the Turn giants are busy convincing Pep Guardiola’s side and Phillips about a move, Newcastle United could scupper their plans.

The Magpies have also held talks with Manchester City, with Eddie Howe keen to address a midfield shortage at the club by bringing Phillips. Once again, this is a loan deal on the cards, with the Magpies likely to negotiate terms that let them decide on a permanent move via a buy option instead of an obligation.

The two clubs are open on covering a chunk of Phillips’ salary, with Juventus reportedly offering better terms in that regard. However, earlier stories indicated the midfielder preferred a move to Newcastle United, which could benefit Howe in the race.

Then again, any move will depend on where Phillips sees more opportunities ahead of the second part of the campaign. For the £45 million Premier League winner, gaining ample minutes remains the objective, as he does not wish to lose his place in Gareth Southgate’s England setup.

While Newcastle United could have an upper hand by offering Phillips regular minutes in his preferred league, the lure of Juventus cannot go unnoticed.
