Newcastle United line up January move for Brian Brobbey

Newcastle United will reportedly look to sign 21-year-old Dutch striker Brian Brobbey from Ajax in the January transfer window.

According to a report by Sports World Ghana, Brian Brobbey is the subject of interest from Newcastle United. The Magpies are scouring the market for strikers ahead of the January transfer window. And they have set their sights on the 21-year-old Ajax prospect.

Brian Brobbey: The Story So Far

Brian Brobbey was one of the most highly-rated young strikers when he burst onto the scene at Ajax a few years ago. A graduate of the Dutch club’s youth division, the Dutch striker spent over a decade there, making his first-team debut as an 18-year-old in October 2020.

The youngster’s progress in a few appearances with Ajax did not go unnoticed, and RB Leipzig snapped him up in July 2021. But the move to the Bundesliga did not work, with Brobbey barely featuring and not scoring a single goal at the Red Bull Arena. Ajax re-signed the 21-year-old on loan in January 2022 before completing a permanent deal in the subsequent summer.

Brobbey’s homecoming has not been a resounding success, but he has been one of the better performers for Ajax thus far this term. The young striker has contributed to 13 goals, finding the back of the net nine times while providing four assists. And the player’s progress this season has captured the attention of Newcastle United.

Will Brian Brobbey Fit At Newcastle United?

The Magpies are scouring the market for a striker heading into the January transfer window. While Eddie Howe has two top-class strikers in his squad, both have dubious fitness records. In addition, Callum Wilson is on the wrong side of 30. Recent reports have thus linked Newcastle United with several centre-forwards, including Mathys Tel.

But Brian Brobbey is also a viable target for the Tyneside outfit. The 21-year-old Dutch striker can learn the ropes from Wilson before rising in stature and competing with Alexander Isak for the first-choice striker’s berth at St. James’ Park.

Howe has improved Isak under his tutelage, with the Swede scoring at a higher rate than he ever did in his career. So, even if some Newcastle United fans are sceptical, Howe’s influence should give them cause for optimism surrounding the 21-year-old Ajax striker.
