La Liga champions Barcelona are reportedly tracking the progress of 24-year-old Dutch midfield powerhouse Mats Wieffer at Feyenoord.
According to a report by Spanish outlet SPORT, Mats Wieffer is the subject of interest from Barcelona. The reigning La Liga champions are scouring the market for defensive midfielders ahead of the 2024 summer transfer window. And they are closely monitoring the progress of the 24-year-old Feyenoord midfield powerhouse.
Mats Wieffer is a native of Borne and spent his formative years in his homeland. He began his youth career at his hometown team, RKSV NEO Borne, before joining FC Twente in 2010. The Dutchman subsequently rose through the ranks at FC Twente before graduating from the club’s youth division in 2020.
But Wieffer rose to prominence at Excelsior Rotterdam and has seen his stock soar further since moving to Feyenoord last year. Like fellow summer 2022 signing Santiago Gimenez, the 24-year-old was instrumental as Feyenoord won the Eredivisie title in the 2022/23 season. And he has been ever-present in the middle of the park for his team this term, turning out 16 times thus far.
Wieffer’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several high-profile clubs. The report by SPORT has revealed that the player has appeared on the radar of FC Barcelona, with the Blaugrana closely monitoring the Feyenoord midfield powerhouse.
Barcelona signed two midfielders this past summer, with Oriol Romeu and Ilkay Gundogan arriving at the club. But both players are on the wrong side of 30 and will only be short-term solutions for Barcelona. Romeu, in particular, will unlikely stay with the Blaugrana for many years, like Marcos Alonso.
So, it behoves Barcelona to invest in a younger holding midfielder in the 2024 summer transfer window. Several candidates, including Gabriel Moscardo, have thus emerged on Barcelona’s radar. But Mats Wieffer is also a viable target, considering he has been stamping his authority for Feyenoord.
The 24-year-old Dutch midfield powerhouse has also established a foothold in his national team. For now, though, Wieffer is only someone whose progress has alerted Barcelona. So it will be interesting to see if he becomes Barcelona’s top target in the 2024 summer transfer window.
