Chelsea might be open to a sale of £25 million summer signing Robert Sanchez to fund the signing of a new No.1 in January.
Football Insider insisted Chelsea could cut Robert Sanchez’s stay at Stamford Bridge short by selling the Spaniard in January. The £25 million summer signing signed a massive deal at Stamford Bridge, but club chiefs could feel his sale could help them fund a new arrival in the same position.
Chelsea always wanted to sign a new goalkeeper to become their undisputed No.1, and there were mixed signals at the start of the season. The sale of Eduaord Mendy to Saudi Arabia and the shaky form of Kepa Arrizabalaga forced the club to dip into the market.
In came Robert Sanchez in a £25 million move from Brighton, and earlier, it appeared he would fight for a place with compatriot Arrizabalaga. The quickfire loan exit of the latter to Real Madrid opened the doors for Sanchez to claim the No.1 spot.
Since the season began, he has started all games, although he has yet to fully convince Mauricio Pochettino or the club chiefs about his quality. Some shaky moments have cost Chelsea massive points, and those in charge of transfers are reportedly thinking about moving away from the £25 million summer signing in January.
Sanchez signed a massive seven-year deal worth 600,000-a-week at Stamford Bridge, and it would take a significant effort from both sides to get an exit agreement. Chelsea may have thought about the alternative and could also keep home, which could be the case as Fabrizio Romano recently denied links to Aaron Ramsdale.
Similarly, Chelsea are linked with Diogo Costa, the FC Porto keeper, but signing him would require a big financial commitment. They are also looking at many more names, but ideally, they might keep hold of Sanchez until summer.
Even then, a sale cannot be discounted as club chiefs feel they could fund a move for a new No.1 with the funds from Sanchez’s sale. Whether it’s feasible after such a short stint at the club remains the question, but stranger things have happened in the last 18 months at Chelsea.
