Liverpool are keeping tabs on Devyne Rensch ahead of the January window as Jurgen Klopp eyes defensive signings to bolster the backline.
According to Football Insider, Liverpool are keen on Devyne Rensch as Jurgen Klopp eyes defensive signings ahead of the January window. The Reds do have a few defensive depth issues, with the 20-year-old defensive prodigy seen as an able backup to Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Jurgen Klopp’s original transfer plans during the summer window suffered a blow after the departures of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho. The Liverpool boss may have thought about keeping the duo and adding new stars to his defensive setup.
Instead, Klopp focused all his efforts until the very end of the window on revamping his midfield but did bring quality reinforcements. Hence, heading into the January window, the German boss will look for defensive signings to bolster his backline.
For instance, they are the only team in the current top six to lack a left-footed centre-back. Liverpool have seen links to Goncalo Inacio and may have to pay big to sign the Portuguese international. Another concern for Klopp is to find a backup to Trent Alexander-Arnold, with no other recognised right back in their squad.
Joe Gomez had deputised for Alexander-Arnold when he missed a few games this season, but the Englishman may not come across as a long-term solution. Hence, Klopp wants another player in that position, one who knows the role.
With that in mind, Liverpool are keen on Devyne Rensch of Ajax, as they could approach ahead of the January window. The 20-year-old defensive prodigy has played more than 100 times for the Dutch side and is currently their first-choice right back.
Rensch also had Arsenal’s interest back in the summer, with Mikel Arteta reportedly keeping tabs on the 20-year-old defensive prodigy ahead of January. The Gunners went on to sign his former Ajax teammate Jurrien Timber, but the Dutchman has since suffered a season-ending knee injury.
Liverpool will likely face competition from the Gunners in the chase for Rensch but may have the upper hand if they make an early approach. Similarly, there are links to Denzel Dumfries, but whether the Inter Milan star fits their budget remains the question.
As for Rensch, the 20-year-old can also play in central defence, which adds to his versatility and Klopp’s liking. With his contract up in 2025, Liverpool might consider him a cost-effective target ahead of the January window.
Moreover, Ajax have had a torrid start to the season, with the Eredivisie giants sitting at the bottom of the table after the last round of matches. Hence, if an opportunity arises for Rensch from a team like Liverpool, he might make the switch.
