Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips has emerged as a target again for Tottenham Hotspur heading into the January transfer window.
According to a report by Football Transfers, Kalvin Phillips is the subject of interest from Tottenham Hotspur. The outlet has suggested that the North London giants were also keen on signing the English international in the summer transfer window. Meanwhile, Manchester City will likely listen to offers for the player, who has not paid off the £42 million they shelled out for him.
Kalvin Phillips was one of the most highly sought-after midfielders in the Premier League when he left Leeds United last year. The 27-year-old was a talismanic midfielder for Leeds United, helping them remain in the Premier League. His progress captured the attention of clubs like Liverpool and Manchester United before Manchester City won the race to secure his services.
The Premier League champions coughed up £42 million to prise Phillips away from Leeds United. But the move has not paid off for either party, with the English international being a bit-part player for the Citizens. Meanwhile, Pep Guardiola has spoken about the player’s weight issues, even branding him overweight last year.
Phillips’s struggles have continued this season, as he managed only 167 minutes of game time in five appearances thus far. So, with the January transfer window two months away, the Englishman should start thinking about his future. And Tottenham might offer him an escape route out of Manchester City.
The North London giants were also keen on signing Phillips in the summer transfer window. But a move did not materialise, with Manchester City choosing not to cash in on him. However, with game time hard to come by at Manchester City, the Premier League champions are open to offloading him in January.
Recent reports have linked Phillips with Arsenal. But the Gunners face stiff competition from their local rival Tottenham in the race to sign the 27-year-old. And amid uncertainties surrounding the future of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, the former Leeds United talisman is a viable target.
Manchester City might not be able to recoup the £42 million they paid to secure Phillips’s services last year. But the Premier League champions are smart sellers and tend to exact high values from players’ sales. So, it will be interesting to see how much they demand when they receive an offer from Tottenham.
