Sofyan Amrabat nearly joined Liverpool before Manchester United move

Manchester United signed Sofyan Amrabat from Fiorentina during the summer transfer window, but Liverpool also wanted him.

A report from Daily Mail claims that Sofyan Amrabat was close to joining Liverpool before he completed his switch to Old Trafford. Manchester United signed the Moroccan midfielder on loan from Fiorentina on Deadline Day.

Apparently, the deal was nearly done. but it collapsed because of a last-minute hitch. Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp phoned the player personally regarding the transfer and he tried to persuade him to move to Anfield. The 27-year-old has joined Manchester United on loan with an option to buy him permanently next summer.

As per the report, the problem that led to the collapse of the transfer took place from the player’s camp, and transfer talks were put on hold for 24 hours. That forced Liverpool to look elsewhere and sign Dutch midfielder Ryan Gravenberch from Bayern Munich.

Amrabat made his home debut for Manchester United in the Carabao Cup third-round clash against Crystal Palace on Tuesday. The 27-year-old has proven to be a quality player for club and country over the past year, and he will look to make his mark in English football now.

Amrabat was outstanding for Morocco at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, and he helped them reach the semi-finals of the tournament. Manchester United could certainly use a combative midfielder like him, and Erik ten Hag will hope that he can influence games straightaway and establish himself as a regular starter for his side.

Manchester United need his defensive cover and aggression in the middle of the park. He could be the ideal partner for Casemiro, and he will help Manchester United tighten up defensively. The Red Devils have seemed vulnerable the season and someone like Amrabat could help them improve on both ends of the pitch.

His arrival will help shield the back four and it will also allow the creative players to operate with more freedom. Meanwhile, Liverpool signing Ryan Gravenberch has impressed with his cameos so far and it remains to be seen whether the 21-year-old can fulfil his tremendous potential at Anfield in the coming years.
